eFuel as a step towards circularity

Liquid Wind’s third eFuel facility project will be built in cooperation with Umeå Energi and will be connected to Umeå Energi’s cogeneration plant Dåvaverket. The facility will capture biogenic CO2 from the Dåva plant and combine it with green hydrogen produced from renewable electricity to generate eMethanol.  

The eFuel facility will be able to supply up to 130,000 tons of fossil-free fuel per year to the shipping industry and capture 230,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually. Simultaneously, the fossil share of carbon dioxide emissions from the Dåva cogeneration plant will be captured for long-term storage in the bedrock using Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

By capturing carbon dioxide from the Dåva cogeneration plant, Umeå is taking further steps towards circular flows and the goal that Umeå City and Umeå Municipality will be climate neutral by 2030 and 2040, respectively.

Part of a green innovation center

Dåva Eco-Industrial Park, located in Umeå, is envisioned as a world-leading center for green innovation in environmental technology, recycling, green energy, and local production. With the aim to foster an industrial symbiosis between businesses, academia, and the public sector, the park seeks to attract activities, education, and research focused on environmental technology, recycling, energy, and local production.

Liquid Wind's eFuel facility is part of this vision and will contribute to the goal of creating a circular hub where companies can operate sustainably, fostering collaborations and innovations while promoting a climate-neutral industrial area by 2040.

As an energy company we play an important role in reducing both society’s climate footprint and the footprint from our operations. Capturing the carbon dioxide from the Dåva cogeneration plant will allow us to take yet another step towards circularity. Umeå Municipality has pledged that the city of Umeå will be climate neutral by 2030, and the municipality itself by 2040. The establishment of an electrofuel production plant at Dåva could be an important step in that direction.
